Three Trees Pte. Ltd. (CEO: Ian Shimizu, hereinafter “3T”) has agreed to partner with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (“Kansai Electric”) and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (“Tokyo Gas”) to advance a carbon credit generation project in the Republic of Ghana (“the Project”). 3T has also entered into a capital and business partnership with Kansai Electric and its subsidiary K4 Ventures, LLC (hereinafter “K4V”), with the aim of further strengthening collaboration in the carbon credit business.

The Project aims to restore degraded land in southern and central Ghana through reforestation and the regeneration of native forests, generating approximately 1.2 million tonnes of high-quality carbon removal credits over 40 years, in line with the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). In addition to carbon removal, the Project will deliver strong co-benefits, including biodiversity restoration, job creation, and infrastructure development for local communities through reforestation activities.

The Project is already registered with Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) under ID 4126 and currently covers approximately 2,800 hectares of reforestation. Looking ahead, 3T’s long-term goal is to scale the initiative to more than 50,000 hectares.

Comments

Ian Shimizu, CEO, Three Trees Pte. Ltd.

As recent extreme weather events show, climate change is a shared global challenge and an unavoidable issue for industries. Carbon credits play a crucial role as a market mechanism to support greenhouse gas reduction and removal, enabling corporate transitions and sustainable growth. We are honored to work with Kansai Electric and Tokyo Gas, two of Japan’s leading energy companies, on forest restoration. We are committed to creating measurable, verifiable results at scale, combining natural capital regeneration with economic value creation. Through nature-based projects like this, we will continue to contribute to building a sustainable society alongside economic development.

Tom Rivett-Carnac, Founding Partner, Global Optimism; Advisor, 3T

The truth is clear: we will not solve the climate crisis unless we restore and protect nature. Forests are among the most effective tools we have—not only for removing carbon from the atmosphere, but also for supporting biodiversity, livelihoods, and resilience. This initiative in Ghana is a vivid example of how nature-based solutions deliver multiple wins at once, and why scaling them is one of the greatest imperatives of our time. I am proud to see 3T leading in this space and look forward to the global impact that will follow.

As founder and chairman of Commons Asset Management, a long-term investment trust company, and as Co-Chair of the Middle East & Africa Committee at Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives), I welcome this collaboration between major corporations and a pioneering startup operating in Africa. I also commend all those who worked hard to make it happen. I have closely followed Ian Shimizu’s journey since he spoke at our annual ‘Commons Social Entrepreneur Forum’ five years ago, and I greatly admire his commitment to tackling the global climate crisis through his work in Africa. I look forward to seeing even greater achievements from him and his team.
